Safaricom's M-PESA is powered by a technology architecture built to process millions of financial transactions while remaining available around the clock. The platform's core infrastructure has historically relied heavily on Huawei's Mobile Money Platform, with the second-generation M-PESA system, known as G2, developed with Huawei after Safaricom moved the platform's infrastructure from Europe to Kenya.
The technology has since evolved significantly. Safaricom has been moving away from large monolithic applications toward cloud-native and microservices-based architecture. Its modernisation programme has included Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift, which is built on Kubernetes and allows applications to run in containers that can be deployed and scaled more efficiently.
M-PESA's infrastructure is also designed around high availability and scalability. Safaricom's newer Fintech 2.0 architecture uses database sharding, separating customer data across different parts of the infrastructure so that a failure does not necessarily affect every customer. Safaricom says the new system is designed to increase maximum processing capacity from about 4,500 transactions per second to as many as 12,000.
APIs are another major part of the stack. Safaricom's Daraja 3.0 platform allows developers and businesses to connect websites, mobile applications and business systems directly to M-PESA. This supports services such as customer-to-business payments, business payments and integrations that allow M-PESA transactions to become part of larger digital products.
Cloud infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as well. M-PESA 2.0 has used Huawei Cloud Stack technologies including elastic computing, load balancing, auto scaling, web application firewalls and centralised infrastructure management. These technologies allow computing resources to expand as transaction demand increases while improving resilience and operational efficiency.
The result is a technology stack that looks increasingly similar to the infrastructure behind major global fintech platforms. M-PESA is no longer simply a mobile money application. Underneath the familiar phone interface sits a combination of distributed infrastructure, cloud computing, APIs, containerisation, databases, cybersecurity systems and highly available transaction processing technology built to keep one of Africa's most important payment networks running.
